The CrossFit Open: A Snapshot
The CrossFit Open is an annual event that marks the kickoff of the CrossFit Games season. It’s a global competition where CrossFit athletes of all levels come together to test their fitness and push their boundaries. This three-week challenge consists of a new workout announced each week, and participants have the weekend to complete and submit their scores.
A Glimpse into History
The roots of the CrossFit Open trace back to 2011 when CrossFit Games organizers decided to make the competition more inclusive. By allowing anyone, anywhere, to participate, they turned it into a worldwide celebration of fitness. Since then, it has grown exponentially, uniting CrossFitters from every corner of the globe in the spirit of competition and camaraderie.
The Intramural Open: Fostering Community Spirit
Now, let’s talk about the Intramural Open – our own twist on this global fitness phenomenon. In the spirit of fostering community and friendly competition within our gym, we’ve adapted the CrossFit Open into our very own Intramural Open.
Picture this: Teams formed within our gym, each with its unique identity and camaraderie. It’s not just about the individual athlete; it’s about the collective effort of the entire team. From seasoned veterans to those embarking on their CrossFit journey, everyone plays a vital role.
How Does It Work?
Teams earn points based on participation, performance, and spirit. Every member’s effort contributes to the team’s success. The workouts remain challenging yet scalable, ensuring that everyone, regardless of fitness level, can join in the fun. It’s not just about who finishes first; it’s about the shared sweat, cheers, and high-fives that make the Intramural Open a truly special experience.
We have our coaches as team captains, totaling three teams (Team Alec, Team Jess, Team Rachel & Davis), and we divvy up everyone that signs up onto one of these teams. More details to come on where to sign up, how to earn your team points, and how the winning team will be chosen.
The best part about the Open are the Friday Night Lights throwdowns. Each week a workout is announced, we all wait until Friday night (roughly 4-7pm) and come together as a community to hit the workout together. It’s the biggest event we do all year and happens three weeks in a row! With the last week being a larger celebration with food, drinks and some time to hangout after everyone finishes the workout.

The CrossFit Open and our Intramural Open are more than just workouts – they are celebrations of fitness, community, and personal growth. This year, the Open will run from February 29th through March 18th. We will be hosting our Friday Night Lights workouts on March 1st, 8th, and 15th.
